Internal Fat vs Visible (Subcutaneous) Fat

Your body stores fat in two main places. Subcutaneous fat sits directly under your skin — it's the fat you can pinch on your stomach, arms, or thighs. Internal fat, or visceral fat, is stored deeper, wrapped around your abdominal organs: your liver, pancreas, and intestines.

They're not the same thing, and they don't behave the same way. Subcutaneous fat is mostly just storage. "It's the same as belly fat you can pinch." Not quite — the fat you can pinch on your stomach is largely subcutaneous. Internal fat sits underneath the muscle wall, around the organs, which is why it can be present even when the visible, pinchable fat on the stomach seems modest.

"There's nothing you can do about where fat is stored." Genetics does influence storage patterns somewhat, but the major drivers — diet quality, movement, sleep, and stress — are all modifiable, which is genuinely good news rather than a fixed sentence.

"It only matters for people who are already unwell." Internal fat is worth understanding as a preventive concern, not just something to address after a diagnosis. Catching an upward trend in waist size early is far easier to act on than waiting for it to become a bigger problem.
